2018 Civic Si Top Speed
Looks like the Civic Type R's power output isn't the only thing Honda has underrated.
If you believe what Honda tells you, the new Civic Type R is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine that produces 306 horsepower at the crank. Recent dyno tests suggest that Honda's hot hatch is far more powerful than advertised as it sent 301 hp to the wheels. Now it turns out that Honda may also have been underrating the Civic Type R's top speed. Officially, the Civic Type R tops out at 169 mph according to Honda, but a new video posted by L'argus shows the hatchback exceeding its official top speed figure.

While out testing the European-spec Type R in Germany, the team was able to push the car to its limit and attempt a top speed run on an unrestricted section the autobahn. As a video focusing on the speedometer shows, the Civic Type R managed to accelerate past the Honda's claimed top speed and hit 283 km/h (176 mph).
It's worth noting of course that a speedometer isn't 100 percent accurate, as a GPS will provide a more accurate reading. It still shows that the Civic Type R is faster than Honda originally claimed, though, and can match the speed of the Audi RS3 Sportback which tops out at 174 mph when configured with the Dynamic Plus Package. Potentially, it could go even faster since it's difficult to max out a car on a public highway. Since the camera is focused on the speedometer, we can't see if traffic prevented the Civic Type R from reaching its full potential. We already know that the Honda Civic Type R shouldn't be underestimated, having smashed the record for the fastest FWD at the Nurburgring.
While it may be pricey, particularly when you factor in devious dealership markups, a cheaper Civic Type R could be coming to America with the same engine as the current model, so hopefully there won't be any performance cutbacks.
